Ah, so is that the reason they're called Identity Discs then?

[Nihlus starts fiddling with the controls for the collar on his MID. The air around him fizzles briefly and the Turian is replaced by hooded, dark skinned program with deep, blood red circuitry.

He eyes the piece of armor still jutting out of his chest for moment before swapping out for a more feminine bust shape.]

Should I be walking around with a mask? Any fashion or cultural faux pas I should avoid in general?

Yes, they hold our identities and code on them. A program without a disc can be arrested on sight.

[Tron nods in approval of the choice of render, but furrows his brow a bit at the color.] Some programs wear a helmet, though it's not required.

You... may want to carefully consider your choice of circuits color, though. Red like that shows your allegience to Clu and may attract negative attention. Blue or light green may blend better.

However, if your intention was to infiltrate Clu's ranks, then the red would be fine.

[Well, he's not intending on infiltrating Clu's ranks immediately, so he switches the colors to a pale blue instead.]

Why are programs without discs arrested?

[He can kind of guess. It like having no personal documents or social security codes, but the discs seem a lot more personal than that, somehow.]

[Tron smiles a little as the colors more closely match his own.] That will come in handy, being able to change your color like that.

Why? Because if you don't have a disc, you become a stray... lose your memories, yourself. It's very easy to take advantage of a program without a disc, so strays are more rounded up for their own protection.

At least they used to be. Clu's purpose is more to redesign them into his own army.

Clu is the system admin program who decided that he could run the system better than his own User. He tried to kill him and took over... he appropriates programs for his own army, "rectifies" them, forces them to follow his will.

[He's going to just leave out the part where Clu did the same to him... and who Rinzler really is.]

He's dangerous and powerful, and not someone to go up against without careful planning.
